Railways
Ilona Koivisto and Tiina Tuulasvaara-Kaleva

The inauguration ceremony of Tampere's first north-south railway track took place in June 1876. The railway station was built outside the city limits to Kyttälä on the western side of the rapids. The Pori railway leading west was finished in 1895. As Tampere now had connections to all directions via the railway network, there was no need for new railway tracks in 70 years. The railway operated as a significant means of transport for the industry and brought visitors into the city, as well as new inhabitants from further away than before.
