Air traffic
Ilona Koivisto and Tiina Tuulasvaara-Kaleva

Regular air traffic in Tampere began in 1937 after Härmälä airfield was finished. Before that date, reckless private entrepreneurs flew for show, employing the surface of Näsijärvi for takeoffs and landings. Finland's first attempt at flying was made in Tampere already in the spring of 1911. The maintenance of Härmälä airfield was initially carried out in an ecological fashion, as sheep ate the tufts of grass growing on the landing strip. After the air traffic machinery developed, the city built a larger airfield to Pirkkala in the 1970s.
