Computers appeared to assist businesses since the 1950s. First the punched card machines helped the city's electric plant and Tampere telephone co-operative in invoicing. The invention of micro circuits and processors had a decisive impact on the development of computers. Education in ADP started at the University of Tampere already in the mid-1960s, after which date it has also been developed in TTTK, the technical university, and today also at Tampere's vocational college. In the 1980s computers entered people's homes. Important ADP businesses were founded in Tampere since the 1970s. They concentrated first and foremost on planning the information technology, product development and research. The Internet began its spreading in the 1990s, and at the same time Tampere saw the birth of several multimedia businesses.
